THE STORY OF [PIAS] NITES
5 editions of Brussels' defining indoor festival, booking the artists the world would love next.
Booking Alt-J, Claptone and Agnes Obel before the rest of the world caught on, inside the industrial sheds of Tour & Taxis: that was the ambition behind [PIAS] Nites Brussels. Shadow to Live made it real.
Kenny Gates, founder of [PIAS], had a clear vision: an indoor Brussels festival that would bring together artists who would never normally share a stage, in an immersive, uncompromising format. He needed an operational partner with the capacity to deliver. Shadow to Live stepped in as executive producer from the very first edition in 2010 and held that role for five consecutive years.
The challenges were concrete. Tour & Taxis had never hosted an indoor festival at this scale before [PIAS] Nites. Converting industrial hangars into a premium music experience, securing the necessary permits, negotiating subsidies and bringing sponsors on board for a concept with no track record yet: that was Shadow to Live's work. The festival's growth reflects it: 7 artists on a single stage in 2010, growing to 20-plus artists across multiple stages by 2014 and 2015.
Across five editions, Shadow to Live co-curated with [PIAS] lineups that proved visionary in retrospect: Paul Kalkbrenner, Mogwai, Laurent Garnier, M83, Faithless, Kavinsky, Étienne de Crécy, Kolsch, Cassius, Girls in Hawaii, Oscar and the Wolf, dEUS, The Human League, Melanie De Biasio, Milky Chance, 2ManyDJs. Some were rising fast at the time of their appearance, others were confirmed legends. That combination became the festival's signature.
At its peak, [PIAS] Nites drew 15,000 attendees per edition and received nominations at the European Festival Awards in both Best Indoor Festival and Best Small Festival categories. Belgian and international music press consistently covered the event as one of Brussels' essential annual fixtures.
From production structure to funding negotiations, from artist deal-making to on-site technical coordination, Shadow to Live built [PIAS] Nites Brussels one edition at a time. Five years of festival is five years of defended artistic choices, managed risk, and a Brussels music scene made stronger for it.
These nights were created to bring together artists who would never normally cross paths. They became major events.
